Adopting a Family • What to Expect

Initial Contact

Please contact us by email ( info@grandvillecavaliers.com OR ldgrandemange@msn.com ), and let us know what you are looking for and how we can help. We love our pups dearly and do our best to make a perfect match, this is why we would like to get to know you. Our hope is to bring you both a lifetime of JOY!

Before We Meet

Before we meet, expect to receive a “prospective owner questionnaire” or a phone interview. This helps me to remember your specific request, also it helps me to determine if we may have a puppy to suit you. In the process, you will hopefully get to know me as the breeder and see if I am the person you hope to work with in your search for a puppy.

Once you have filled out the questionnaire, or we have met by phone, or in person, I will keep your name on file and contact you when and if we have a pup to suit you. If I do not have what you are looking, I will do my best to refer you to another reputable breeder, usually through our club web site: www.ckcsc.org   I do not take deposits, I only ask you to keep me updated if you find another pup while waiting.

Grandville Welcome!

Once we have chosen a puppy for you, expect a nice long visit at our home. There we will answer all your questions and get you off to a great start!

Allan is in admiration of Hayden,
as he meets him for the first time.

Allan meets the rest of the gang.
They are all excited to greet and lick our visitor.
WARNING: Don’t wear your Sunday best!

It’s Francoise’s turn to get her welcome and meet Hayden!

Going Over Puppy Folder

During your visit I will go over your PUPPY FOLDER: This includes most of what you need to know to raise your new Cavalier: grooming, training, health, and our Grandville Contract, which includes our spay/neuter agreement.

Here is Joyce going over her puppy folder with me and Red Sox, her new Black and Tan puppy.

Recommended List of Materials

Before you arrive, you will receive a letter with a list of recommended materials to buy, for example size crate, X-pen, collar, grooming items, and more. Your first bag of high quality dog food is offered to you when you come!

Essential grooming items: slicker brush, pin brush, comb, scissors, nail clippers, tooth brush and doggie toothpaste, water spray bottle, and a snood ( this goes over the head and helps to protect the long ear featherings as they eat).
Don’t worry, I will teach you how to use them!

You may also want to bring a soft sided Sherpa Bag. This will allow to carry your pup around with you easily the first few weeks in a safe environment until he has completed his puppy shots. Here is Hayden discovering his new comfy sherpa bag before his departure.

Shipping

If you are far and can fly to come pick up your puppy, that is the best option, as the puppy will be able to travel comfortably in cabin with you in an airline-approved travel bag under your seat.
Here in the photo you see Mike introducing Shay to her Sherpa bag at my house right before he flies with her to her new home.

If you are unable to come to my house to visit and pick up your puppy, then I can suggest two options:

1. I can ship your puppy by air, using a service like "Pet First" by Delta, in which he/she will travel in his/her crate that I get them used to at my home before they leave. They will be comfy cozy with a blanket with the smell of home, and before they know it they will have arrived. I usually only ship out of Roanoke, Virginia, on short direct flights if at all possible. At times one or both parties can drive to a bigger airport farther away to make the drirect flight possible for your puppy. The puppy is shipped collect, at buyer's cost.

2. My prefered option: I can suggest a ground transport service by Shady Springs Kennels-Pet Relocation Services, if you are within their driving area. Please visit their web site to see all that they offer:

Shady Spring Kennels - Pet Relocation Services

We have used their ground transport service and were very pleased. The puppy travels in a van specially equiped for pets, and gets all the personal attention he/she needs while they are delivered right to your door. They are kept in a large, comfy kennel in the van, and have the possibility to stop for potty breaks if needed. Personal care is priority! Only the best for your puppy! Feel free to ask me to get you a quote.

Goodbyes

One last hug before Teddy leaves

The last goodbyes are very hard for us, and you may see me shed a tear or two, but we take great pleasure in knowing we have done our best to make someone happy, and we trust that you will give our pups the best home possible. We pray that God will bless you and your new Cavalier with many years of JOY!!

“A joyful heart is good medicine” (Psalm 17:22)
