Adopting a Family • What to Expect

Initial Contact

Please contact us by phone (434-386-7450) or email ( info@grandvillecavaliers.com OR ldgrandemange@msn.com ), and let us know what you are looking for and how we can help.

Before We Meet

Before we meet, I will e-mail you a “prospective owner questionnaire” or set up a phone interview. This helps me to remember your specific request, also it helps me to determine if we may have a puppy to suit you. In the process, you will hopefully get to know me as the breeder and see if I am the person you hope to work with in your search for a puppy.

Once you have filled out the questionnaire, or we have met by phone, or in person, I will keep your name on file and contact you when and if we have a pup to suit you or we are expecting a litter. If at that time you do want a Grandville puppy, I will request a deposit.

Once I receive your deposit, I will send you a puppy packet and an excellent book on how to raise a puppy. The puppy packet is a spiral notebook I created over the years full of useful information all about Cavaliers--grooming, nutrition, minimal use vaccination info, training, books, and so much more! It will also detail the items you might like to purchase before the arrival of your new Cavalier. I request this information and book be reviewed prior to picking up your puppy in order to ensure a smooth transition for both you and your puppy.

Grandville Welcome!

When you come to pick up your puppy, expect a nice long visit at our home. There we will answer all your questions and get you off to a great start!

They are all excited to greet and lick our visitors.
WARNING: Don’t wear your Sunday best!

Going Over Puppy Folder

During your visit I will go over your PUPPY FOLDER: This includes most of what you need to know to raise your new Cavalier: grooming, training, health, and our Grandville Contract, which includes our spay/neuter agreement.

Here is Joyce going over her puppy folder with me and Red Sox, her new Black and Tan puppy.

Recommended List of Materials

Before you arrive, you will receive a letter with a list of recommended materials to buy, for example size crate, X-pen, collar, grooming items, and more. (Your first bag of high quality dog food and a bowl is offered to you when you come!)

Essential grooming items to purchase: slicker brush, pin brush, comb, scissors, nail clippers, tooth brush and doggie toothpaste, water spray bottle, and a snood ( this goes over the head and helps to protect the long ear featherings as they eat).
Don’t worry, I will teach you how to use them!

You may also want to bring a soft sided Sherpa Bag. This will allow to carry your pup around with you easily the first few weeks in a safe environment until he has completed his puppy shots. Here is Hayden discovering his new comfy sherpa bag before his departure.

Shipping

If you are far and can fly to come pick up your puppy, that is the best option, as the puppy will be able to travel comfortably in cabin with you in an airline-approved travel bag under your seat.
Here in the photo you see Mike introducing Shay to her Sherpa bag at my house right before he flies with her to her new home.

If you are not able to fly to my house please feel free to CONTACT ME to see if there are other options.

Goodbyes

One last hug before Teddy leaves

The last goodbyes are very hard for us, and you may see me shed a tear or two, but we take great pleasure in knowing we have done our best to make someone happy, and we trust that you will give our pups the best home possible. We pray that God will bless you and your new Cavalier with many years of JOY!!

“A joyful heart is good medicine” (Psalm 17:22)
